A BRIEF HISTORY:
Born in Mexico City in 1967 and moved to the United States in 1972.
Like all artists I developed a fascination for art at an early age. Through the encouragement of some teachers I began taking studio classes at Lock Haven State College at the age of 12 unfortunately this only lasted 2 years and I am self taught otherwise. I won a scholarship, but decided not to take art classes and left after a couple of years to make it on my own in New York. In 1989 I moved to New Jersey so I could be close to Manhattan and grow as an artist but breaking into the gallery scene was harder than I thought and I soon found myself bar tending at night so I could paint and sculpt during the day. Supporting myself through my artwork alone was not happening fast enough and I needed a change. In 1993 I became friends with the popular Illustrator Dave Cutler and was introduced to the world of Illustration. As soon as I realized all I needed was a Fax and a phone to conduct business I decided to get out of the city and moved to Charleston, S.C.
I was first published by the Washington Post in 1994 and soon became a regular with the LA Times. I’ve had some great opportunities over the last 15 years and have since been published in Italy, Spain, Germany, Sweden, Australia, China, and throughout the United States. I’m a bit of a workaholic which makes it almost impossible for me to turn down any calls, so I’m usually involved in a wide variety of projects. Most of the illustrations I do lend themselves well to a wide variety of applications from advertising, annual reports, corporate brochures, magazines, book covers, posters and large murals or to even the smallest black and white newspaper spot.
I don’t like entering competitions but have submitted two “call for entries” and was admitted both times in Communication Arts 40, 41, although I don’t think this means anything and haven’t entered any since. I have also won a few awards that I didn’t know I was competing for and very much appreciate the Art Directors who entering them on my behalf. Over the years some companies have bought the originals and my work has become part of their corporate collections. including three painting acquired by Karecters Design Group in Canada that originated from a phone card campaign and six painting from a brochure acquired by Hale & Dorr, one of the oldest law firms in the U.S. I’ve had paintings turned into billboards and large office murals and in 2003 I was asked to participate in a traveling art show that selected one artists from each state along the east coast that started in New York and ended in a Florida Keys gallery. I currently live and work in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. with my wife and three children.

RECENT ACTIVITY:
In 2005 I finished building the studio 22’x24’ it’s a free standing building connected to our house by a covered breezeway. It’s important to me that my children see me leave and go to work everyday since working from a home office in pajamas with a five o’clock shadow seems to send the wrong message, not to mention insulating my sanity from cartoon theme songs.
In November 2007 I began working on personal paintings again. I wanted to pick up where I had left off 15 years ago and put together a body of work to sell through galleries. These paintings are different than my illustration work in that they are not made to interpret the written word but instead interpret myself. These images like all the illustrations I have are available for licensing and I can see them working well as cosmetic packaging, wine labels and a variety of advertising.
By November 2008 I finished the first 30 paintings and am now represented by two very nice galleries with a couple more pending. MARY MARTIN Fine Arts Gallery in Charleston, SC & ONESSIMO Fine Art Gallery in Palm Beach, FL. If you have a moment follow the link below to the other website and let me know what you think.
